Bangladesh Government Strong Action: Forms Committee to Solve BPL Player Payment Issues

In recent times, there have been more corruption allegations surrounding the BPL (Bangladesh Premier League). As a result, the Bangladesh government had to take powerful action by constituting a committee to evaluate the recurring payment issues.

These payment issues have plagued the prestigious tournament of the Bangladesh Premier League. Moreover, there have been increasingly heated discussions concerning unpaid wages and financial management mistakes within the league. In addition, misconduct allegations have also been framed against BPL management, which has led to player protests and franchise controversies.

The main reason for establishing this committee is to mark an important step towards finding solutions to the prolonged financial challenges. And, these monetary struggles have devastated the BPL ever since its initial launch in 2012.

Earlier Investigations and BCB’s Anti-Corruption Measures.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has repeatedly stated that they strictly adhere to the Anti-Corruption Code set by ICC (International Cricket Council). In addition, they have confirmed following the zero-tolerance policy toward corruption, may that be in any form.

However, the Anti-corruption unit of the BCB is proactively reviewing all integrity-associated matters of the Board concerning Bangladesh cricket. Moreover, they have been engaging with them with the greatest confidentiality, professionalism, and anonymity possible.

According to reports, this is the first time since 2013 that the Bangladesh Cricket Board has officially conducted a thorough inspection regarding BPL corruption allegations.

Non-payment to Players leads to backlashes over BCB!

There are allegations that the BCB has not taken any bank guarantees from the BPL teams ahead of the tournament. As a result, the non-payment issue has become a critical problem for the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

According to the reports, there is more than one team that has failed and missed the deadline to pay their players.

This has resulted in Durbar Rajshahi players protesting and local players boycotting Chattogram’s practice session. In addition, many overseas players have been unwilling to play against Rangpur Riders in Dhaka.

Bangladesh government scrutinizes non-payment of players in BPL

According to the latest reports, it is said that the Bangladesh government has appointed a disciplinary investigation task force. And, this step has been enforced to inquire about the BPL’s inadequate ability and failure to pay the players in the 2024-25 season.

The 3 members of the investigation committee are:

  • Humayun Kabir, the NSC director of sports.
  • Sajia Afrin, assistant director of sports.
  • Saiful Islam, NSC chairman’s private secretary.

Many allegations refer to statements like cheques have been given, but no payment received by players, which seemed to be like a fraud. And, the formed committee will look into this matter and evaluate the failure reasons, which will not only save the BPL and BCB but save the name of the whole nation.

Recent Activities Leading to Government Demand Intervention

As of now, the situation has become very critical and reached a point where players of the Durbar Rajshahi franchise were left with no clue. They found themselves stranded in Dhaka’s hotel with unpaid dues, which could be the worst case.

On the other hand, reports have indicated that the Durbar Rajshahi franchise has so far settled only 25% of the dues and that too only for a few players. Whereas, the franchise has left most of the players unpaid.

It’s not just the Durbar Rajshahi, but also other franchises like Chittagong Kings failed to pay their players on time.

International and Local Players Affected: Leads to Training Boycott!

The crisis has become so severe that it not only affects the international players but also seriously impacts the local players. As a result, these local players have decided to boycott the training session in Chattogram which was held the previous month. The main reason for carrying out this boycott was the absence of standardized advance payments. However, these are the most basic things that have been common, but the franchise failed to fulfill them.

The complexity of the situation and its possibility to damage BCB’s reputation has forced the government to take strict actions.

Marking this as the first departmental corruption investigation in the BPL ever since its inaugural season in 2013 emphasizes the extreme urgency to solve this matter.

NSC Statement Release about BPL as Professional T20 League!

According to the NSC’s recent statement release, it mentioned clearly that the BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) is already an established professional T20 league.

Forming a new Bangladesh is the ideology that is associated with the formation of the BPL 2025 edition. In addition, the Honorable Chief Advisor has shared many innovative ideas connected with this matter.

More importantly, the Honorable Advisor of the Ministry of Youth and Sports has arranged noteworthy government funds. And, these funds would be used for the redesign and refurbishment of three sports equipment facilities. Making such changes would ensure the 2025 BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) is successful.
