A Simple Plus Minus Count for Beating Blackjack: Guide

Blackjack is a casino banking game. It is one of the most played casino banking games in the world. These decks of 52 cards descend from a global family of casino banking games known as Twenty-One.

Let’s see how we can beat Blackjack with a Simple Plus Minus Count.

How to Beat Blackjack Using the Simple Plus Minus Count

You can beat Blackjack using a simple Plus Minus count. Casinos have known this for a long time. Some books teach people the ways people do it. But the game is still popular as most players don’t invest time in learning how to play Blackjack very well.

The Count & The Card Values

The house edge changes as you cut the cards from a deck. Players must play perfect basic strategy and count cards to exploit the edge by betting more.

The Plus Minus count keeps a running total of the “count.” As players see cards in action, they assign the following numbers and keep a running count in their heads. The count will always start at zero with a new deck or shoe.

2, 3, 4, 5, 6 – each of these cards counts as plus 1

Aces and ten cards (tens, jacks, queens, and kings) count as minus 1

7, 8, and 9 counts as zero – ignore them

For instance, first hand, the cards on the table are a 10, a 5, a 6, an 8, and an ace. You count minus 1 for the ten, back to even with the five, plus 1 with the six, the eight is zero, and back to even with the ace. Your running count is back to zero. As they show new cards, you continue the count. Any time a count is a minus number or zero, make a bet of one unit.

Practice the count & True count conversion

On the first hand of a single deck, you bet one unit and wait. Here are the cards run: 6, 4, 2 ace, ten, five, four, six, 9, 8. Your count should be: 1, 2, 3, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 4(ignore the 7, 8, 9 – they are zero). If the odds are in your favor, bet 2 or 3 units.

Next, the new cards are 10, 8, 2, ace, ten, 4, ten, ten, 9, ten, and 3. Your count should start with four and go 3, 3, 4, 3, 4, 3, 2, 2, 3. The count is still three, so you should bet 2 or 3 units again.

In a single-deck game, you will get one more hand. When you had the edge, you could bet more. If you are playing a shoe game with many decks, you must make an actual count before making your next bet.

With a shoe, you must factor the number of cards you haven’t used into your bet. Even if the deck is favorable, you still only bet 1 unit. But you must guess how many decks you have used and how many remain in the shoe based on the discard rack. With a 6-deck shoe, you will divide your running count by six at the beginning. If your running count is 12, your actual count is 12/6 = 2. And if four decks remain, divide 12/4 = 3. If two decks remain, you divide your running count by the two remaining decks: 12/2 = 6.

You must keep the running count in your head and divide the remaining decks by that running count before each bet. The payoff is that depending on the positive running count. You know how much to bet and when to take insurance.

How to bet & not get barred

We don’t like to let card counters play. Using your brain to beat the house is legal, but you are from playing. The trick is that you don’t want to get noticed. But you have to walk the tightrope!

You need to bet more than 1 unit when the count is positive. Bet 1 unit to start and add a single unit for each 1/2 true count advantage:

True Count = 1 Bet 1 unit

True Count = 1.5 Bet 2 units

Here True Count = 2 Bet 3 units

True Count = 2.5 Bet 4 units

True Count = 3 Bet 5 units

Here True Count = 3.5 Bet 6 units

True Count = 4 Bet 7 units

True Count = 4.5 Bet 8 Units

Here True Count = 5 Bet 9 Units

True Count = 5.5 or more you should bet ten units

Pit bosses train spot counters. Their main tip-off is players who rarely take insurance. Pretend as an average player. If the count jumps, don’t jump your bet from 1 unit to 10 units. Learn how to cover up. Use a parlay when you win and the count increases.
