2022 Asia Cup Squad Announced by Bangladesh Cricket

Bangladesh Cricket Squad announced- Asia Cup is set to begin on August 27 with Sri Lanka and Afghanistan playing the first game at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai.

The tournament will be played in a T20 format considering the T20 World Cup later this year. For this tournament, Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced the 17-member squad with some notable changes in the team.

They announced the squad a bit later as they got the extension to name the squad because they were still waiting for the medical reports of some of the injured players.

New Captain till the WC

Shakib ul Hasan will captain the side in the Asia Cup 2022 after a discussion between the selectors on who will be the new captain.

At first, N Hasan was made the captain of the side in the recent series against Zimbabwe.

T Iqbal is retired from the T20 format so he will not be considered as the new captain.

Shakib ul Hasan will also lead the side in the Tri-series and in the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

He is also a captain of the test team after Mominul has decided to step down.

The selectors have gone with the experience (Bangladesh Cricket Squad)

Bangladesh has gone with the experience and brought back M Rahim and S Rahman, E Hossain, Saifuddin, and T Ahmed in the team.

Saifuddin also brought back in the team after a gap of almost 10 months. He last played for Bangladesh in a T20 World Cup last year in UAE. Due to injury. He was ruled out of the tournament.

Sabbir Rahman also finds the place in the shortest format for Bangladesh. He last played for the team in this format almost three years ago (2019).

N Hasan has been ruled out of the tournament with an injury. He captained the side in a series against Zimbabwe which Bangladesh lost by 2-1.

New role for M Rahim

M Rahim will likely to open in the tournament for the Tigers. He will look to make the most of the new role given to him.

The new role for M Rahim will help him to take his time in the middle. Also, he will have only two fielders to beat out of the 30-yard circle to get the boundaries in the powerplay. In that case, the card might go in the favour of Bangladesh. Let’s see how this role works for the wicketkeeper batter of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh hasn’t won the tournament yet. They came close to winning it in 2012 and 2018, having reached the final but not crossing the line.

They are coming in the tournament after losing to Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series by 2-1. Bangladesh also lost the ODI series against Zimbabwe by 2-1, having won the last ODI.

So their form is not good coming into this big tournament. They will look to go on a drawing board and try to find out the mistakes they had done and try to rectify them.

Asia Cup 2018

Bangladesh reached the final in 2018 when the tournament was played last time in a 50-over format.

The match was a low-scoring encounter between the two teams. Bangladesh made 222 without playing their 50 overs. They made the match out of it and India won that match on the last ball.

L Das made an outstanding hundred in the first inning. Bangladeshi bowlers bowled well as a unit. M Rahman and R Hossain took two wickets each. Mahmudullah, M Mortaza, and N Islam also took one wicket each. India won that game by 3 wickets.

They will look to better their record and want to go to the next step and win the tournament.

Bangladesh will start its campaign against Afghanistan on August 30 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah. They are in a Group B of the Asia Cup 2022 alongside Sri Lanka (SL) and Afghanistan (AFG).

The final of the tournament will be held on September 11 at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai.
